Kelmscott Manor and Buscott House a joint outing
Kelmscott Manor

Grade 1 listed farm house and associated barns loved and lived in by William Morris, designer, poet, author, campaigner and Father of the Arts & Crafts Movement. Set in the West Oxfordshire countryside in the village of Kelmscott next to the Thames river. This tranquil place inspired Morris to produce some of his most iconic designs and conservational thoughts. Between 2019 & 2022 major restoration and improvement works funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and others took place. The Manor is open to the public every year, Thursday to Saturday from the beginning of April to the end of October. Organised coach visits on Wednesdays. Visit our website for more information.
Buscot Park

Late 18th-century house, set in enchanting landscaped grounds. This property is administered on our behalf by Lord Faringdon. You can find out more about the property on Lord Faringdon's website, www.buscot-park.com
Garden
Extensive pleasure gardens, including the Four Seasons garden, the Peto Water garden and woodland avenues.
A coach has been booked for a visit to Kelmscott Manor in Lechlade.
This was the historic summer home of William Morris – designer, writer, political activist and acknowledged father / founder of the Arts and Crafts Movement in the late 19th Century.
William Morris first visited the Manor in May 1871, looking for a house for the family away from the unhealthy environment of London. When he wrote about it to a friend the very next day, he called it a ‘heaven on earth’. He took a long lease, staying as often as possible until his death in 1896. It inspired his designs (e.g. Strawberry Thief), writings (News from Nowhere) as well as informed his thinking about society, ecology and building conservation. The Manor is now owned and managed by the Society of Antiquaries who have preserved its rich heritage.
There are beautiful grounds and gardens to enjoy, as well as fascinating collections in the Manor itself.
[Possible extension visit to nearby National Trust property Buscot Park with its Faringdon Art collection and extensive pleasure gardens.]
